St. Louis Community Foundation Grants Management Services Exceed $16 Million in 2021
Over $16.7 million was granted from funds held at the St. Louis Community Foundation (STLCF) from private foundation clients in 2021. The impact of this grantmaking activity will ripple throughout our region and beyond for years to come.
The Foundation represents a variety of funds through grantmaking from private foundations to donor advised funds. Services for these funds include:
- Helping donors identify their giving priorities
- Identifying potential grant recipients and executing site visits
- Establishing an application, review, and reporting process
- Facilitating the decision-making process and conversations around future giving strategies
- Management of grantee relationships
- Meeting facilitation
The Foundation’s team of experts helps clients and fund holders identify the results they wish to achieve through their philanthropy. They also assist in the development of a course of action to achieve their goals. Our staff understand that moving from making charitable gifts to impactful grantmaking requires a thoughtful, strategic approach—which can bring great rewards.
Grantmaking activities through the Foundation have reached many sectors of our region’s nonprofit community.
For example, The Charless Foundation made 28 grants totaling $500,000 in 2021. Since it converted from a private foundation to a field of interest fund at the St. Louis Community Foundation in 2017, The Charless Foundation has granted over $1.6 million to organizations that provide care for and serve the elderly with a focus on South St. Louis City and County.
“The St. Louis Community Foundation brings to The Charless Foundation its extensive knowledge and professional capabilities in St. Louis’ charitable giving landscape,” says David Streett, Charless Foundation advisory committee leader. “By providing strategic and informed advice and back-office support, the St. Louis Community Foundation facilitates the giving process for our board, while also assuring Ms. Charless’ legacy is carried on—systematically—forever.”
VOYCE is one of the many organizations that has received funding from The Charless Foundation. VOYCE works in 21 counties in 350 long-term care communities that serve as homes to roughly 28,000 residents. The organization’s goal is to become the principal source of information, empowerment, and advocacy for individuals living on the long-term care continuum and their families.
“For those that are going into long-term care, it can be incredibly confusing trying to decide where to choose to spend their remaining years,” said Marjorie Moore, Executive Director. “Because of The Charless Foundation’s support of the VOYCEconnect information and assistance line, residents of our community have direct and free access to experts who can help them understand the complicated long-term care landscape quickly.”
The Charless Foundation also supports VOYCE’s long-term care Ombudsman Program, which provides residents of nursing homes with advocates to speak up for both quality of care and quality of life.
“The Community Foundation has been incredibly supportive as the foundation has grown over the years. The application focuses on program impact and gets to the heart of the program,” said Moore.
The St. Louis Community Foundation provides grantmaking services to more than 800 private foundation and donor advised fund clients, and continues to expand its services.
