Census Funding Pool Meeting Exhibits Funds to Raise Census Count
On Friday, September 20, 2019, the 2020 Census Funding Pool Informational Meeting was held at Deaconess Center for Child Well-being in St. Louis. The event included 75 to 100 attendees from all different organizations around the city, mostly representatives from nonprofits. The Census Funding Pool Grant will be given to nonprofits and other community organizations that will aim to increase participation in the 2020 Census.
Alongside the St. Louis Community Foundation, there were nine other local funders that organized the meeting. In November, these 10 groups will select which nonprofits will receive a grant from the St. Louis Regional Census Fund, which is hosted at the St. Louis Community Foundation. Approximately $350,000, will be used to provide community-based organizations with culturally-relevant training, and activities that will reach hard-to-count populations. The proposals are due by midnight on Tuesday, October 15, 2019.
To represent the Community Foundation, Elizabeth George, Director of Community Investment, spoke at the meeting. She touched on how the request for proposal will work and what the application is like for the nonprofits. The other speakers explained the three key roles: education, outreach, and technical assistance which will be used to evaluate applicants.
With the help of other funders, Missouri Foundation for Health is heading a state-wide marketing campaign for the 2020 Census. To assist in this project, the St. Louis Community Foundation will be available to provide education and outreach,” George said. George will continue speaking to community groups about the importance of the Census and the role they can play in getting the Census count up.
