Understanding the Market During the Wake of COVID-19
A message from our CFO, Dwight Canning –
In this volatile market, keeping perspective is imperative. Corrections in the market are a normal occurrence of investing. While markets tend to rise over time, corrections can be agonizing. Now that we’ve reached a 20% + correction, it’s time to take a deep breath again. This type of correction last occurred in the late 2000’s.
In the many discussions we’ve had with our investment advisors to the community foundation, the one common theme is to not panic, to understand that this is part of the way markets move through the years, and over time, the market will go up again. Trying to time the market is a futile task or objective for a community foundation. Our view has been to ride out the ups and downs of the market by staying disciplined in our asset allocation. Getting caught up in the panic that currently surrounds us will not bring improved investment results, as timing the market has never been an option for us.
Donors can be assured that our investment managers are keeping a very close eye on the market and the opportunities it may present. If you would like to discuss the impact of the current market situation as it pertains to your grant making strategy, please contact us at 314-880-8200.
